Help! My photos are red! Tips from SJA Studios | Phoenix Wedding Photographer

image

Do you ever take a shot and wonder why the entire picture looks like it was pulled out of an old photo box because of the red tint to it? This can happen when you are shooting indoors, in low light, or when your camera settings aren’t adjusted correctly.

To fix this error and get correct coloring on your images, change your camera’s settings for white balance. The white balance setting is one of the only settings on your camera that adjusts color, not exposure. You can change the settings to match the type of lighting you are currently shooting in. If you are shooting in a school auditorium, then adjust the white balance to the icon that looks like a fluorescent light bulb. If you are shooting outside with cloud coverage, then changing your setting to the little cloud icon. Making these changes helps your image coloring to be spot on!

If you have a simple camera that doesn’t offer these setting changes, then you may want to consider shooting in black and white, or editing the image after it’s taken to a black and white image. That way you can still capture the memory, and not be frustrated with the way the picture is tinted!

Hanging images with style! | SJA Studios | Arizona Wedding Photographer

So you’ve had a super fun photo shoot.  Lots of great pictures to choose from!  What do you do now?  Once you have your favorite images picked out, what can you do to create a visually pleasing arrangement on your walls? Here are a few quick tips to help you make the most out of your space.

1. Hang in small groups rather than being spread out. If you have a large wall and just a few pictures, the space will look much better if you group the images together. It gives the illusion of one large piece and keeps the focal point together instead of spread out.

2. The center point should be at eye level. When you are hanging a group of images and art together, the center piece should be hung at the level of one’s eye, if you are standing and looking at it. Then the other pieces can be grouped around this central piece.

3. Have one thing in common. It adds a very interesting look if there is one thing that all of the images have that is the same. This could be the frame color, or that the images are all in black and white, or maybe all of the images are of baby faces. Having a common theme really pulls it all together.

4. Use a shelf and lean the images against the wall. This can be a great way to display images and be able to add a little candle or plant to warm up the entire wall display. Frames can even be hung just inches above the shelf while using the shelf for smaller frames or interesting art pieces.

5. Hang big images where they will be seen from across a room, small images in a wall that you’d stand next to. Think of the person viewing the image. If the wall is a hallway that you are standing 24 inches from, it would be very hard to view a 48 inch picture. Hang that picture on a wall across the room where it is easier to view from a distance and keep smaller pictures on the hallway wall.

6. Create a frame outside a frame. Try hanging 4 square images in a square so that the entire feature appears to be one large frame. You can do this with any number of images, and you may want to lay them all out on the floor before hanging them on the wall.

Now that you have some tips, let’s get to hanging those pictures!

Jessica and Chris’ Stunning Sedona Wedding with SJA Studios!

If you have read my blog before, you know how much I love shooting up in Sedona.  Is is just beautiful up there and I am very fortunate to get the opportunity to photograph so many weddings in such stunning surroundings.  For Jessica and Chris’ big day, we were at one of my all time favorite places, The Sedona Golf Resort.  From the first meeting with these two, I knew it was going to be special.  Such an awesome couple!  Here are a few pictures from their beautiful day….

We started the day across the street at the beautiful Las Posadas Inn where all of the getting ready took place.

After everyone was ready, we captured Jessica and Chris as they saw each other for the first time before the ceremony.

And, then it was off to get married!

Of course, a few more portraits of this beautiful couple!

I know I have said it before but my clients are the best!  I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to work with people like Jessica and Chris.  They were so fun and getting to know them was really awesome!  I am so lucky to have been invited to share their special day!  I wish them both all the happiness in the world!

Becky and Brian’s beautiful, blustery Sedona wedding with SJA Studios

image

As all of you probably know by now, I love shooting in Sedona.  It is absolutely beautiful up there!  On this particular day, I had the honor of shooting Becky and Brian’s really sweet, very small destination wedding.  They are from Pennsylvania and Becky really wanted a small destination wedding.  So off they went across the country with their closest family and friends to get married in Sedona.  They chose one of my favorite places, The Sedona Golf Resort.  It is an absolute gem of a location with beautiful views of the red rocks and a beautiful property. On this May day, the clouds decided to come out and we got a little wind and rain.  No big deal!  It made for some really dramatic photos!  Here are a few pictures from their wonderful day….

Lucy and Matt’s super fun engagement session

One of the best ways to get to know your photographer before the wedding day is to have an engagement session.  It gives you a chance to see how things are going to go on the wedding day and make you feel more at ease about the process.  This session was with  a super cute Lucy and Matt!  These two had a really fun time in downtown Phoenix.  We walked a little, had a few laughs, and captured some really nice photos of this cute couple.  Next stop…the wedding day!

Would you love to have better pictures in your Instagram feed? It’s easy to improve your photos for Instagram and you can start by following these 5 simple steps.

1. Lighting is the key. Make sure your subject is near a window if inside, but not in direct light. If you are outside, shoot in the shade to avoid harsh shadows. Avoid shooting at night when possible, the low light availability causes blurriness in your images.

2. Don’t use the Instagram camera. Instead, take your pictures with your camera’s phone or even using the Camera+ app. Both will create better images that have more clarity. Then select them from your photo album once you are in Instagram.

3. Use better editing apps. Instagram’s filters have been outdone by better apps including VSCO, Camera +, Photoshop Express, and many more. If you want to up your photography game, then you need better filters and editing options.

4. Get creative. Use different angles, compositions, and even vary the distance from your subject. Don’t be afraid to take many pictures and just choose one. Playing around will stretch your creativity and help you develop more originality.

5. Add blur. Using the blur function within Instagram is a great mimic to the “shallow depth of field” that can only be created with DSLR cameras. But if you’re not shooting with a DSLR, then just add blur.

Figuring out how to better manage your time can be a constant battle. At the end of the day the list only has 2 things checked off, you’ve missed an appointment that you swear you had on your calendar, and your late to just about everything. Does this sound like you? If so, you are not alone. Here we share some favorite habits that may make your life a bit easier:

1. Write everything down. It’s been said that the faintest pen is stronger than the best memory. By writing it down, it won’t be forgotten. A great idea to stay on task is to keep a piece of paper (or digital notes) nearby so when a new idea or a task that you need to complete pops into your head, write it down, then stick with your original task until it’s complete. You can tackle the new one idea without losing focus on your first task.

2. Use only one calendar. With today’s technology, digital calendars can be in your pocket, at your work station, and in the kitchen. They can be wherever and whenever you need them. So don’t leave the soccer schedule taped to the fridge, get all your activities and events on one central calendar! That way you don’t overlap planning activities and events.

3. Don’t underestimate your time. If you feel like you are late to everything, then maybe it takes you longer to get ready than you think. Or maybe you don’t calculate the correct travel time. Sometimes just getting into the car can take a good 5 minutes. Start planning for more time than you think and plan to arrive early. This not only helps you to be on time, but allows for unplanned road blocks as well.

Many parents are using the school photographer less and less. They find that using a professional photography studio offers more value than the school photographer. The limited options of the school photographer make it not even worth the packages. Here are some of the things they enjoy about using a professional photographer.

  • Any background is better than a school photo background! Why not get your child’s portrait taken in your home, their bedroom, or in the beautiful outdoors?

  • More natural smiles. Wouldn’t you rather have a picture of your child laughing than a pushed smile?

  • Props. Many parents like to include some of the child’s “favorites” in their photos with them.

  • Multiple Poses. Get more than just one headshot and one pose. Full length shots are great for a memory (record) of their growth.

  • Custom designed packages for you. Not many people use wallet sized photos anymore, so why would you need them in your school photo package? Order just what you need and want with a professional studio.

  • More product options. Love canvas? Ever seen a metal print? They are amazing and something you will love having as an option.

  • Digital copies. Who doesn’t need or want a digital copy of their keepsake pictures? It also makes sharing on social media that much easier!

  • Add a sibling… or two… Doesn’t it make your heart swoon to see pictures of all the kids enjoying each other together?
